CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

…floating on air! Very tall and thin, she was a middle-aged woman with angular cheekbones and completely white hair that was tied in knots all over her head, resembling nothing so much as a World War II sea mine. Her skin was tanned brown, and she had sharply attractive features and piercing eyes. The whole auditorium murmured in surprise as she made her dramatic entrance, hovering a metre above the ground.

She floated smoothly across the stage, her long rainbow-coloured dress swirling around her ankles until she stopped, suspended in midair in front of the lectern. Her cold eyes peered at the students through cat-eye glasses, and she raised one of her pointed fingernails, instantly reducing the room to silence. Then she slowly descended to the floor.

“Levitation and telekinesis,” the woman announced. “I am Dr Mahogany Botolfe, and by the end of this lecture I hope to impart enough knowledge that you can begin to develop your skills in this area. Some of you will remain Unlit, but this information is essential for you to know in your vocation as a Lightworker. How many of you have used this force already?” Two hands went up, Number 157, a boy up the back, and a slightly built Indian girl at the side of the room, Number 10.

Abby nudged Eyre fiercely, drawing Dr Botolfe’s eyes to them.

“The Saevus,” Abby hissed, and Eyre shook her head. But as Dr Botolfe continued to study her with an impatient look on her face, Abby held Eyre’s hand up, elbow still resting on the table. Eyre pulled her arm down, but Dr Botolfe kept her eyes on Eyre and then looked across at the other two students. “What you have done is unusual for first week students,” she said, “but not unheard of. Perhaps you three could come down to the front here, please?”

Shooting Abby a panicked look, Eyre walked down the stairs to the front and stood next to 157 and 10. She noticed in concern that both of them had a bright Inguz on their upper arm.

Dr Botolfe looked them up and down with her sharp eyes, her gaze stopping as she saw Eyre’s bare upper arm. She looked at Eyre and raised her eyebrows, turning to one of the other students.

“Number 157, could you demonstrate to the class what you can do?”

Stepping forward, 157 screwed his eyes shut and concentrated. The hall was silent as the students watched in anticipation. Suddenly he rose above the floor about twenty centimetres, hovered for a second, and then thumped back down. Opening his eyes, obviously pleased with himself, he beamed at the audience who obligingly applauded.

“Very good, 157,” Dr Botolfe purred. “You obviously have a talent in this area. Thank you. Step back. Number 10, could you show us what you can do also, please.”

Number 10 stepped forward, her brows furrowed as she concentrated. She put her hand out in front of her and the Felsic of a student directly in front of her raised up into the air about five centimetres off the desk.
